Dr. Michelle Johnson went into medicine for the best possible reason. “I really like helping people.” She chose obstetrics and gynecology because “it is the best of both worlds; I get to deliver babies and be a surgeon. On top of that I really like having women as patients; so being an OB/GYN is perfect for me.”
Dr. Johnson came to Calvert in 2003 after spending six (6) years at Washington Hospital Center. She was a Resident at George Washington University Hospital Center with Dr. Barbara Estes who had already opened Calvert OB/GYN of Southern Maryland. When she approached Dr. Johnson about joining her, Dr. Johnson said yes.
“I Iove being in Calvert! One of the first things I noticed was that the people here are super nice! They were – and are – so different from the patients in DC. I especially love my pregnant patients. They are so happy! It’s just such a joy to work with happy people all day.”
Dr. Johnson also enjoys her gynecologic patients, even though she often only sees them once a year. “If I see them more regularly, that generally means there is a problem and that’s never fun for either of us.”
Like most surgeons, Dr. Johnson has a special love for being in the OR. “I love the challenge, but more importantly, I love knowing that what I am doing in the OR really matters. I mean, if I am called in for a ruptured ectopic pregnancy, I can walk out knowing I literally saved that person’s life. I love anatomy, I love the physical aspects of performing a surgery, and I love the immediate satisfaction that comes from knowing I am helping someone feel better.”
In joining Calvert Women’s Center and Calvert Physician Associates, now CalvertHealth Medical Group (CHMG), CalvertHealth OB/GYN, Dr. Johnson is looking forward to being able to focus entirely on patient care. “I Love my patients and I am love being able to spend the time with them that they deserve. Being part of CHMG means that I can spend less time worrying about the practice and more time practicing medicine.”
